Remove Your Data Before You Recycle Your Computer  

None of the consumer recycling programs will clean the data off your computer hard drive (except HP’s trade in program, for a $15 fee.) These services are provided under the asset management programs (to businesses and institutions) but what should consumers do before they send back their computers?

There are several products which clean data off hard drives. We don’t endorse any brand of software, but here are some options.

Who can get free recycling from Samsung?

Samsung's recycling programs are free only to consumers. Businesses must pay a fee.

Free TV recycling from Samsung

Samsung will take back any consumer electronic product with their name on it, ranging from televisions, DVD and VHS players, audio equipment and home theater systems, to cameras, camcorders, computer monitors, printers, and peripherals. This does not include home appliances like refrigerators.

 

Samsung has collection points in all 50 states, plus they will offer periodic collection events, some in partnership with retailers. Free recycling of Samsung cell phones

Samsung has a separate program for cell phones, where you can download a shipping label to mail back old cell phones for free. http://mobile.samsungusa.com/recycling/index.jsp

 

Samsung Trade-in program

Samsung has a trade in program for monitors, laser printers and multi-function products. Trading in working products can year you a discount for purchasing new Samsung products. http://www.anythingit.com/samsung.html

Samsung printer toner recycling

Samsung will take back and recycle your old printer toner cartridges. Click here to request a prepaid shipping or mailing label.

Business users can request larger toner collection boxes.

Mail back option

Samsung allows you to mail back certain old Samsung products (up to 60 lbs) for free recycling. You can send back monitors, laptops, DVD players, computer peripherals, printers, small TVs (up to 22 inches). Use the site to generate a free UPS shipping label. (You will have to pay a fee if you want UPS to pick this up at your house, but it's free if you drop it off to them.)
