Why the Double Standard?
Companies who are fighting legislation in the U.S. that would require them to establish “Producer Takeback” recycling programs are touting their virtuous behavior for doing the same in Europe. The reason for their virtue is a 2002 European Union law that required electronics companies to set up and pay for recycling of their products. These companies use double standards when it comes to producer responsibility - they comply with it (and brag about it) in their home countries, but fight it here.

Sharp, Panasonic, and Philips have actively lobbied against “producer takeback” bills in many states, calling them impractical and unnecessary. Yet all three companies comply with the similar standards in Europe:
